Mumbai : A benchmark index of Indian equities fell below the 20,000-point mark Tuesday on heavy selling pressure amid weak Asian cues.
The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was trading nearly two percent lower at 19,916 points in the afternoon session.
At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the 50-share S&P CNX Nifty also lost over two percent. The index was trading 128 points down at 5,984 points.
All the broader market indices were also trading deep in the red. The BSE midcap as well as smallcap indices lost over two percent.
There was heavy selling pressure in auto and banking scrips. Tata Motors plunged 4.42 percent and State Bank of India was trading nearly three percent lower.
