Bokaro: A man, whose son was arrested on charges of being a Maoist and died in police custody in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district, Tuesday claimed his son was tortured to death and sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe in the case.
“Only a CBI probe will expose police officials involved in the death of my son, Dhirendra. He was tortured to death in police custody. My son was innocent,” Surendra Singh told reporters here.
Dhirendra Singh was arrested Nov 16 by the Dhanbad police, on suspicion of being a Maoist and he died under mysterious circumstances Nov 17. Dhirendra’s family members denied the police charges.
Political parties have expressed shock over the incident and sought action against the police officials involved in the incident.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the opposition Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatatrik (JVM-P) and others have sought action against police officials.
“The culprits in the Dhirendra death case should be punished,” Cooperative Affairs Minister and JMM leaders Haji Hussain Ansari said in Ranchi.
Chief Minister Arjun Munda has also sought a report from the home secretary.
