New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday hit back at Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the issue of taking action against corrupt leaders, saying there was nothing to be proud of if more leaders from Congress had resigned on allegations of wrongdoing.
“She has taken pride that many more resigned in the Congress. If it is numerically more corrupt, it will see more resignations. This is nothing to be proud of,” party leader Arun Jaitley said.
Party spokesman Prakash Javadekar said that the Congress acted “only after too much is revealed”.
“It is ultimately for cover up. They (Congress) shy away from actual probe,” he said.
Gandhi Wednesday cited the Bofors issue and resignations of former union minister Shashi Tharoor and former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan and said her party had acted swiftly against corruption. She added that people would judge her party’s actions more positively than other parties.
“As far as the Congress is concerned, you know how we deal with matters of corruption starting from the issue of Bofors,” Gandhi told reporters in response to a question on whether BJP’s Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa should resign on corruption charges.
