Women’s kabaddi team win’s India’s 11th Asiad gold

Guangzhou : The Indian women’s kabaddi team won India’s its 11th gold at the Asian Games here Friday, while three boxers and the men’s kabaddi team remained in the gold hunt on the 14th day of competitions.

Suman Kundu was in the hunt for a bronze in women’s wrestling.

India now have 54 medals, comprising 11 gold, 14 silver and 29 bronze.

The kabaddi team comfortably won 28-14 against Thailand at the Nansha Gymnasium. Women’s kabaddi is making its debut at the Asian Games.

The men’s team, which has won five gold medals since kabaddi was introduced in 1990, are also eyeing their sixth as they face Iran in the final.

Kundu lost 0-3 to Mongolia’s Nasanburm Ochirbat in the semifinals of the 63 kg freestyle category.

Suman, who defeated Thi Quyen Luong (3-1) of Vietnam and Nestan Kiiazova (3-1) of Kazakhstan in the earlier rounds, will fight for the bronze later in the day.

In the 55 kg category, Geeta defeated Jieun Um of South Korea 3-1, but lost to North Korean Yon Hui Pak (1-3) in the quarterfinals.

Another Indian, Gursharan Kaur, crashed out in the opening round, going down to Guzel Manyurova of Kazakhstan 0-5 in the 72 kg category.
