CWG shooting: Kumar, Singh bag gold setting Games record

New Delhi : Indian shooters Vijay Kumar and Gurpreet Singh won the gold in men’s 25 metres rapid fire pistol pairs event with a Games record at the Commonwealth Games here Thursday.

Australia bagged their first shooting gold medal in the ongoing Games with Alethes Sedgman ensuring a top podium finish in the women’s 50 metres rifle three position event.

Kumar (587) and Singh (575) shot a total of 1,162 to win the gold ahead of Malaysia and Australia.

Kumar and Singh broke the Games record (1,134), by a huge margin, also set by India at the Melbourne Games four years ago. The record was held by Kumar and Pemba Tamang.

Malaysian duo Hasli Izwan Hasan Amir (576) and Hafiz Adzha (568) shot a cumulative 1,144. Australia’s Bruce Quick (563) and David Chapman (562) struck 1,125.

There was, however, bad news for the hosts In the women’s 50 metres rifle three position event, as world champion Tejaswini Sawant failed to qualify for the finals while her compatriot Lajja Gauswami finished sixth.

Alethes won the first shooting gold for Australia while Singapore duo Xiang Wei Jasmine and Aquilah Sudhir took the silver and bronze respectively.
