Wall Street stocks rise in very light trading

New York: Major US stock indices booked minimal gains Monday in slow holiday trading.

On a day when much of the country observed Columbus Day, including the federal government, the New York Stock Exchange saw its lowest trading volume of the year.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average added 3.86 points, or 0.04 percent, to 11,010.34. The broader Standard and Poor’s 500 Index was up 0.17 points, or 0.01 percent, to 1,165.32. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index gained 0.42 points, or 0.02 percent, to 2,402.33.

The US currency rose against the euro to 72.02 euro cents from 71.74 euro Friday. The dollar edged up against the Japanese currency to 82.03 yen from 81.92 yen.
