A bench headed by Chief Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya penalised the United India Insurance after it failed to file affidavit on time.

The bench imposed the costs and noted that despite notice being served and advocate appearing on its behalf, the company failed to furnish an affidavit to assist the court.

The state government had sought payment of claims to family members of deceased sweepers who died on duty while manually cleaning sewage lines.

The court took up the matter on its own initiative along with a petition by sweepers’ union, Kamdar Swasthya Suraksha Mandal, seeking payments of claims.

The matter will come up again Nov 22.
