New Delhi : Security measures in the capital have not slackened even a bit since the Commonwealth Games began Oct 3, the mayor of the Games Village said Wednesday.

“When a mega event draws to an end, the authorities tend to let their guard down, which can be disastrous,” Dalbir Singh told IANS.

“The security arrangements are as stringent now as they were in the run-up to the Games, he said. “Perhaps we are more vigilant now.”

According to the mayor, Delhi’s Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna visited the Games Village Tuesday.

With the conclusion of swimming and athletics events, the practice track and pools in the village are now deserted. This allows the security forces to concentrate exclusively on the residential blocks, Singh said.

“Around 200 volunteers have been told not to come to the village any more as the workload has decreased. Many others have been shifted from inside the village to the international zone,” he added.

The closing ceremony will take place Thursday evening, ending the 12-day sporting extravaganza.
