New Delhi : Historian and author Ramachandra Guha will shed light on “The Indian Political Tradition – And Those Who Made It” at the Penguin Annual Lecture 2010 at the India Habitat Centre Oct 25 in the capital.
Guha’s lecture will be based on his new book “Makers of Modern India”, which profiles 119 Indians whose ideas had a defining impact on the formation and evolution of the Indian republic and contains rare and compelling excerpts from their writings and speeches.
These personalities include Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rabindranath Tagore, Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, B.R. Ambedkar, Raja Rammohan Roy, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, M.S. Golwalkar, Jayaprakash Narayan, among others, a statement by Penguin-India said Friday.
They were not only influential political activists, but also wrote with eloquence, authority and deliberation as they reflected on what Guha describes as “the most contentious times in the most interesting country in the world”.
The Penguin annual lecture brings some of the world’s greatest thinkers and writers in direct contact with the Indian audiences.
In the last three years, the lecture has been delivered by economist Amartya Sen, British politician Chris Patten, and American journalist, author Thomas L. Friedman.
