The move comes in the backdrop of reports that security of dissident leaders of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and opposition parties was being withdrawn.

In his instruction to Director General of Police (DGP) P.S. Gill, Badal said that no one, especially those opposed to the government, should get the feeling that the government was keeping any tab on them.

“The Shiromani Akali Dal has waged long and persistent battles for the democratic rights of the people, and no one in or out of the administration will be spared if found guilty of flouting these values,” Badal said.

Badal’s cousin and former finance minister Manpreet Badal, who was axed from the Punjab cabinet this week, had alleged that his phones were tapped and his official residence bugged by state security agencies.

Other legislators also alleged that their security cover was being withdrawn.
