Chennai : Tamil Nadu’s major opposition party AIADMK stepped into its 39th year Sunday with party cadres celebrating the day across the state by garlanding founder M.G. Ramachandran’s (MGR) statues.
At the party headquarters here, General Secretary J. Jayalalithaa garlanded MGR’s statue and distributed sweets. She also released the party’s souvenir, the first copy of which was received by leader of MGR Forum P.H. Pandian.
At a time when political pundits were commenting about the midlife crisis faced by the party with desertions and electoral losses, the massive crowds that Jayalalithaa’s recent public rallies are attracting has been giving much needed hope to party cadres.
On Monday, Jayalalithaa is scheduled to address a rally at Madurai that is expected to draw huge crowds.
Jayalalithaa has been receiving death threats, warning her not to address the rally at Madurai.
The Tamil Nadu government has asked the central government to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death threats upon a request from the AIADMK.
