New Delhi : The Delhi government Monday declared cash rewards for all the capital’s sportspersons who won medals at the Commonwealth Games which concluded Oct 14. The capital’s 10 medal winners include seven wrestlers and three shooters.
Gold medallists will receive Rs.15 lakh, while silver and bronze winners will get Rs.10 lakh and Rs.5 lakh respectively.
A cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also decided that the coaches of these sportspersons will be awarded Rs.5 lakh each.
The names of the coaches will be forwarded by the players, Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said, briefing reporters after the meeting.
Dikshit said the people of Delhi were proud of the players “who have brought laurels in the Commonwealth Games”.
“The players have done extremely well. Their contribution in making the Games the best-ever is commendable,” the chief minister said in her message.
She also expressed confidence that Delhi will continue to excel in international sporting events.
“The people of Delhi have more expectations from their talented players. The newly developed sports infrastructure, a part of the city’s legacy now, will be utilised to prepare our athletes,” she added.
The gold medallists in wrestling include Sushil Kumar (66 kg free style), Yogeshwar Dutt (60 kg free style), Ravinder Singh (60 kg Greeco Roman) and Sanjay (74 kg Greeco Roman).
Besides, silver medals were bagged by Joginder Kumar (120 kg free style) and Dharmendra Dalal (120 kg Greeco Roman). A bronze medal was bagged by Anil Kumar (55 kg free style).
In shooting, silver medallists include Deepak Sharma, in pistol 50 meters team event and Mansher Singh, in trap shooting. Samresh Jung bagged silver in men’s 25 meters team event and a bronze in 25 meters individual event.
