Congress names new chiefs for Punjab, Karnataka units

New Delhi: The Congress Tuesday named former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh as the state unit chief and G.Parmeshwar as the party chief in Karnataka.

While the party named new state unit chiefs for Punjab and Karnataka, it decided to retain Kaul Singh Thakur as party chief in Himachal Pradesh, Ramesh Chennithala in Kerala and Rita Bahuguna Joshi in Uttar Pradesh, said Oscar Fernandes, chairman of the central election authority of the party.

The party also retained Manas Ranjan Bhunia in West Bengal, Jaiprakash Agrawal in Delhi, A.V. Subramaniam in Puducherry and Yashpal Arya in Uttarakhand.

The names were approved by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who had been authorised by the state party units to choose their chiefs.

Amarinder Singh replaces Mohinder Singh Kaypee, while Parmeshwar replaces R.V. Deshpande.

Gandhi also approved the result of elections to the Pradesh Congress Committees held in northeastern states, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

Nabam Tuki will continue as chief of Arunachal Pradesh, Gaikhangam in Manipur, Friday Lyngdoh in Meghalaya, L. Lalthanwala in Mizoram, Kuldeep Sharma in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Ponnikkkam Shaikhoya in Lakshadweep.

S.I Jamir will be the state party chief in Nagaland.
