Ahead of Obama visit, India signs global nuclear convention

New Delhi : Ahead of US President Barack Obama’s visit here, India Wednesday signed the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage at the IAEA in Vienna, a key step that will enable US companies to resume nuclear trade with New Delhi.

Dinkar Khullar, India’s ambassador to Austria and permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), signed the Convention on behalf of the Indian government.

The convention will give India access to a global fund for compensation in case of a nuclear accident with trans-national implications. It has been signed by 14 countries, including India.

Obama will begin his four-day visit to India Nov 6.
