More than 20,000 police officers to guard APEC cummit

Tokyo : About 21,000 police officers will be on duty around the venue of the two-day Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit beginning on Nov 13 in the Japanese coastal city of Yokohama, China’s Xinhua news agency quoted local media reports Wednesday.

Japan’s National Police Agency held a meeting on Tuesday with the Tokyo and Kanagawa police departments and they confirmed the security measures for the summit, Japan’s National Police Agency, the public broadcaster NHK reported.

Helicopters will be deployed to monitor the surrounding area and plain-clothes officers will board commercial flights to prevent hijackings, according to the NHK.

The level of surveillance on public transport will also be increased, according to the agency.
