“I congratulate Sonia Gandhi for getting re-elected the Congress chief for a record fourth time but she should set a precedent as she did by refusing the post of prime minister (after the 2004 parliamentary polls),” Gadkari told reporters here.

“Sonia Gandhi should now refuse the post of party president and give a chance to any ordinary party man to hold the coveted position. Chidambaram, Pranab (Mukherjee) are good party leaders but they can never dream of becoming party president as it is reserved for the Gandhi family.’’

“It can only happen in the BJP where even a simple party cadre can become party president’’ he said. Referring to himself, he said he was “a grass root worker doing wall writings for the party’’.

On the ongoing hostage crisis in Bihar where Maoists have killed one of the four abducted policemen, Gadkari said: “Maoists have developed a corridor in India and they have hatched a conspiracy to bring down the democratic system of the country.”

He refused to comment about the BJP’s stand on the upcoming verdict on Ayodhya saying“the matter is sub-judice and I will not comment on that.’’.
