India’s GSM subscriber base grows by 2.89 percent

New Delhi: India’s GSM mobile subscribers base grew 2.89 percent in August with the addition of over 13.51 subscribers, with Bharti Airtel alone signing over two million users to gain a near 30 percent market share.

The total number of subscribers in the country crossed 481 million in August as against 468 million the previous month, data released by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) showed.

Bharti Airtel added over 2.03 million subscribers in August, a growth of 1.46 percent over the previous month, to have a total of 141.25 million subscribers.

It was followed by Vodafone Essar, which added over 2.3 million subscribers, a growth of 2.7 percent, taking its total numbers to 113.78 million.

The operator has a market share of 23.62 percent.

Idea Cellular signed over 1.99 million subscribers, a growth of 2.81 percent, taking the total number of its subscribers to 72.74 million. The company now has a market share of 15.10 percent.

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, with 14.61 percent market share, added over 2.29 million subscribers, a growth of 3.37 percent, taking its total subscriber base to 70.36 million.
