Curfew relaxed in parts of Srinagar

Srinagar : Six days after imposing indefinite curfew, authorities Saturday relaxed the restrictions in uptown areas of Srinagar from 12 noon to 4 p.m. and in other places across the Kashmir Valley to allow residents to buy essentials.

“Curfew has been relaxed from 12 noon to 4 p.m. in uptown areas of Srinagar city and in many other places of the valley to allow people buy essentials,” a senior police officer said here.

“A decision on curfew relaxation in old city areas of Srinagar is also being taken shortly,” he added.

Sources here said the curfew could be relaxed in old city areas from 2 p.m. onwards Saturday.

People came out in large numbers in many uptown areas to buy essential supplies as announcements about curfew relaxation were made on local TV and radio stations besides on loudspeaker-mounted police vehicles.

The indefinite curfew was imposed in the valley Monday following massive violence in which 18 people were killed in clashes with the security forces at different places.

“The situation is being closely monitored during the curfew relaxation period,” the officer said.

Due to the uninterrupted curfew for the past six days, residents were complaining of acute shortages of medicines, baby foods, cooking gas and even rations in their homes.
