Kozhikode: Ibrahim is happy that the court has finally approved him as an Indian citizen. The Vadakara First Class Magistrate ruled that the 65-year old was an Indian citizen as the prosecution reportedly could not present documents to prove its argument that Ibrahim was a Pakistani citizen. Whereas, Ibrahim had his school certificate, Ration Card and his name in the Voters’ list etc to prove his part.

Bad luck hit Ibrahim when he was only 22 and searching for a job, according to reports. The agent he approached to go to Dubai cheated him and Ibrahim ended up in Pakistan where he worked in a tea-shop in Karachi for nine years. Ibrahim then managed to get a Pakistani passport and came back to India. He applied for Indian passport after his marriage. When the authorities began to hunt him accusing of being a Pakistani citizen, Ibrahim left home and came back only after seven years.

Ibrahim again applied for Indian citizenship, but was arrested by the Edacheri police in July 2003 accusing him of being a Pakistani citizen. He was then taken to the country’s border where the Pakistani authorities refused to accept him as there was no document to prove he was a Pakistani citizen. The court then released him on conditional bail after reaching back in Kerala. The present court order has come after his continuous legal battle for seven years.
