Harassed IAS officer quits job in Uttar Pradesh

By IANS,

Lucknow: An Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer tendered his resignation here alleging harassment by the Uttar Pradesh government, an official said Monday.

The 1982 batch officer of UP cadre Raju Sharma recently returned after deputation with thecentral government. He had held several important assignments, including a stint at the cabinet secretariat. Sharma still has nine years to retire.

However, after his return, he was transferred thrice in three months, forcing him to take frequent leaves.

A spokesman of the department of personnel confirmed that Sharma has tendered his resignation, but it is unclear yet whether the resignation has been forwarded to the Union government or not.

“Being an IAS officer, his resignation has to be accepted by the central government, but I am still not sure whether the resignation has been accepted by the state government or not,” the spokesman told IANS.

Meanwhile, Sharma was not available for comment and stated to be “out of station.”

During his earlier stint in the state, Sharma had remained in the forefront of the anti-corruption crusade in 1997 to identify the “three-most corrupt” IAS officers in the state.

Almost a year ago, another IAS officer of 1978 batch committed suicide here by shooting himself.
