Malaysia’s met dept reports three quakes in Indonesia, one in Japan

Kuala Lumpur : The Malaysian Meteorological Department reported three earthquakes in Indonesia and one in Japan early today.

It said in a statement that a strong 7.4-magnitude quake struck Indonesia’s Irian Jaya, 645km southeast of Ambon in Indonesia and 2,035km southeast of Tawau in Sabah, at 1.10am.

Two moderate quakes, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, occurred in the Banda Sea in Indonesia at 3.06am and 4.08am, it said, giving the locations as 431km southeast of Ambon and 1,789km southeast of Tawau, and 473km southeast of Makassar in Indonesia and 1,332km southeast of Sarikei in Sarawak, respectively.

It said another moderate earthquake, also of 5.3-magnitude, occurred at 8.42am in the Volcano Islands of Japan, 1,287km southeast of Tokyo and 3,206km northeast of Sandakan in Sabah.

The department said the quakes did not pose any tsunami threat.
