The militants sneaked into Turkey from Syria and opened fire on security teams as a gendarmerie asked them to surrender in the Turkey’s Hassa town in Hatay province, Xinhua quoted Turkey’s semi-official Anatolia news agency as stating.

A gendarmerie is a military force charged with police duties among civilian populations.

Military operations were continuing in the region, unnamed officials were quoted as saying in the report.

According to local NTV channel, the killed militants were members of the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK).

PKK, listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and the European Union, took up arms in 1984 to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey.

Some 40,000 people have died in conflicts involving the PKK in the over last two decades.
