Kanpur blasts case may be transferred to NIA

Lucknow : The Uttar Pradesh government may soon hand over the probe into the 2008 blasts in Kanpur to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), a senior police official said Friday.

This follows the failure of the state anti-terrorism squad to make any headway into the blast that left two dead. Those killed were identified as Bajrang Dal activists, allegedly engaged in manufacturing bombs and explosives.

“Transfer of the case to the NIA would also enable the agency to strike similarities between the blast in Kanpur and those in Ajmer, Malegaon (Maharastra) as well in as the Samjhauta Express, cases that have already been entrusted to the NIA,” said the official, who did not want to be identified. Activists of Hindu right-wing groups are accused in all these cases.

State officials have been discussing the Kanpur case with NIA sleuths over the past two months and came to the conclusion that the central agency was far better equipped to deal with it.

Even as it was suspected that those involved in the Malegaon and Ajmer blasts were also behind the blast in Kanpur, the state police were unable to gather concrete evidence to prove it.
