The 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri project in Kinnaur district generated 7,140 million units against the target production of 6,700 million units in 2010-11, said the statement quoting Vijay Verma, the deputy general manager of the Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVNL), the company that operates the plant.

This has been a record generation since the project was commissioned in 2003.

Verma said the company had set a target to generate 6,900 million units in this fiscal. However, in 2009-10, the plant had generated 7,109 million units.

The SJVNL is a joint venture between the central government and the Himachal government.

Its second hydropower project – 412 MW Rampur hydroelectric project in upper Shimla – will be commissioned by early 2013.

From its maiden Nathpa Jhakri project, SJVNL is supplying electricity to nine northern states. It generates about 38 million units daily.

In May last year, it got listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange.
