Guwahati: Assam Election Watch (AEW) has analyzed 355 affidavits of candidates contesting for 62 seats in the first phase of Assam Assembly elections 2011. Out of these 355 candidates analyzed by AEW, there are only 163 candidates who are graduates and above. Number of candidates not completed graduation is 173 (49%) out of 355 candidates analyzed from the first phase.
Key findings as revealed by AEW on March 31, 2011 are as follows
1. Number of candidates who are 5th pass (out of 355 analyzed) – 6 (2%)
2. Number of graduate candidates in first phase (out of 355 analyzed) – 114 (32%)
3. A total of 44 (12%) candidates (out of 355 analyzed) are post-graduates.
4. A total of 5 (1%) candidates (out of 355 analyzed) are doctorate.
5. None of the candidates in Assam 2011 Assembly election is illiterate.
6. Among major five parties (BJP, INC, AGP, AIUDF, & CPI (M)), INC has maximum no. of candidates, 43 (69%), who are graduate and above. INC is followed by BJP with 31 (50%) candidates, AGP with 28 candidates (55%), AIUDF with 11 (38%) candidates and CPI(M) has 5 (63%) candidates who are graduate & above.
7. A total of 12 candidates (4%) out of 355 analyzed have not given their educational details in the affidavit.
INC has 43 candidates (69%) graduates and above, followed by 31 candidates of BJP and 28 candidates of AGP. AIUDF has only 11 candidates who are graduates and above. Only BJP, AGP and AIUDF have doctorate candidates in their bin. Out of 355 candidates, 10 Muslim candidates are post graduates and 2 are only 5th passed.
