Cardiologist Dr BP Singh murdered in Lucknow

Lucknow: Senior cardiologist and CMO, Family Welfare, Dr Brahma Prasad Singh was shot dead by two unidentified miscreants in Gomti Nagar area of Lucknow on Saturday. Dr Singh was bumped off by the miscreants who came riding a motor cycle. Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead by the doctors there. The bullet-riddled body was taken to the mortuary at the CSM Medical University for autopsy.

Dr BP Singh was the general secretary of the Provincial Medical Services Association, the apex body of government doctors. He joined as CMO, Family Welfare, on February 26, 2011, in the post left vacant by the murder of Dr Vinod Arya on October 27, 2010.The murder is grave as Dr Singh was responsible for disbursing hundreds of crores of rupees in his official capacity.

Dr Singh was on his routine back home from the morning walk with friends Dr PK Singh and Dr HS Srivastava, when the two assailants riding a motor cycle approached him. Before he could sense any danger, two fusillades of bullets were fired at him by an assailant. A scared Dr Singh jumped into the six-feet deep open drain in the middle of the road thus fracturing his leg. The assailants reportedly fired 14 rounds with a 7.65 mm pistol. They reportedly kept firing even as Dr Singh slumped to the ground bleeding profusely and writhed in pain. The miscreants sped off the scene without the slightest resistance from the locals.

A huge police force including DIG/SSP Lucknow DK Thakur, District magistrate Anil Kumar Sagar and a team from the Special Task Force reached the place. Later, talking to media persons, DIG/SSP said that the police were investigating the case and seven teams including the Crime Branch and the STF have been formed to crack the case.

Dr Singh is survived by his wife Sarla and two sons. Sarla is a home-maker and the elder son (B Tech graduate) works in a private firm in Bengaluru while the younger one is pursuing his B Tech.

Hailing from Faizabad district, Dr Singh has served as senior consultant at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospitla, Basti, Balrampur.
