A statement from the government said: “Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has announced reward of Rs.2 crore for captain M.S. Dhoni, and Rs.1 crore each for Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Ashish Nehra, and Virat Kohli.”

Gambhir was the highest run getter in the Indian team on Saturday with 97 runs.
The 83-run stand between Gambhir and Kohli for the third wicket was India’s highest in a World Cup final.

“The rewards have been announced in view of their outstanding performance in the entire World Cup tournament,” added the statement.

Dikshit had earlier said in her message to the team: “Our players have displayed their outstanding performance and supremacy in the game. This is a historic moment after 28 years.

“Delhiites should join all countrymen in celebrating this moment of great joy and happiness,” she added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already announced a Rs 1 crore award to each member of the victorious Indian team.
