Lucknow : Electronic gadgets and other goods worth several lakhs of rupees were destroyed in a massive fire in a multi-storeyed shopping complex in a busy market area in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki town Wednesday, police said. No casualty has been reported.
The fire engulfed Mishra Shopping Complex in Dhanokhar area of the town, some 35 km from here, that houses a number of electronic goods showrooms, garments stores, banks and other commercial outlets. The loss was estimated around Rs.35 lakh.
“A series of explosions were heard after the electronic items stored in the showrooms came in contact with the fire that destroyed a major portion of the building,” police inspector Dipendra Giri said.
“The fire erupted from an electronic goods showroom on the ground floor and soon spread to adjoining five-six commercial outlets. The blaze was controlled with the timely intervention by firefighters and could not reach the banks situated on the upper floors of the building,” he added.
According to police, a few employees trapped inside the commercial outlets were rescued with the assistance of fire-fighting officials.
“Though the exact financial loss in the fire is yet to be established, initially it has been pegged at around Rs.30-35 lakh,” said Giri.
