Siliguri : An association representing the Lepcha community Thursday called for a boycott of assembly polls in West Bengal, accusing the state government of neglecting the community.
Indigenous Tribal Association (ITA) president L.S. Tamsang gave the poll boycott call at a gathering of Lepchas at the Bagha Jatin Park here.
He urged members of the community not to take part in the polls and alleged that the government neglected the community and has “done nothing for its development”.
The Lepchas with a population of over one lakh in Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong sub-divisions of Darjeeling district in the state’s northern part have long been demanding recognition of their native language.
