Army fears infiltration bids during Kashmir local polls

Jammu : The Indian Army is apprehensive of massive infiltration across the Line of Control between India and Pakistan during the upcoming panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

“We are aware of the terrorists’ plans to infiltrate and cause trouble during panchayat elections,” said Maj. Gen. Om Parkash, the general officer commanding of 25 Division, here Saturday.

According to official estimates, there are 3,000 terrorists waiting to cross over to the Indian side of Kashmir from Pakistan.

Talking to newsmen, Gen. Parkash said the “troops are alive to the situation and in a state of high vigil and will not allow the infiltrators to sneak in.”

The 16-phase panchayat elections get under way April 13.
