Union minister’s son held for assaulting poll officials

Kolkata : Subhranshu Roy, the son of union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy and a Trinamool Congress candidate in the assembly polls, was Sunday arrested from an election meeting in West Bengal for allegedly assaulting poll officials, police said.

The rally was addressed by Trinamool chief and union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“He has been picked up from the Naihati area. After Banerjee left and the meeting was over, we picked him up. Right now he is in police custody,” sub-divisional police officer Ajay Kumar Thakur told IANS.

North 24 Parganas police Superintendent Rahul Srivastav told IANS: “He was arrested from the venue of Banerjee’s meeting. The Trinamool supporters tried to forcibly prevent the police from arresting him.”

Roy has been charged with instigating a mob that attacked Election Commission officials
in Boldeghata area of Bijpur assembly constituency Tuesday. An arrest warrant was issued against Roy.

Roy is fighting elections from Bijpur assembly seat in North 24 Parganas district.

Raids were being conducted over the past two days for arresting Roy, with West Bengal Chief Electoral officer Sushil Gupta himself monitoring the developments.

Apart from Roy, 12 people have been arrested, and a police officer, Partha Pritam Roy, suspended for not arresting the accused, who was present in his police station after the crime.

Hours earlier, state’s ruling Left Front demanded the candidate’s immediate arrest.

“I would like to impress upon the Election Commission and th state administration that he be taken into custody immediately,” Left Front chairman Biman Bose told mediapersons here.
