New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday declined comment on the affidavit a Gujarat police officer filed in the Supreme Court, accusing Chief Minister Narendra Modi of complicity in the 2002 riots, and said it will wait for judicial process to be over.
Party leader Arun Jaitley said a judicial process was under way.
“You and I cannot be judge of what truthfully happened. Judicial mechanism is looking into it…Let us leave to that mechanism,” he said.
Sanjiv Bhatt, senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from Gujarat, has alleged Modi wanted to teach Muslims “a lesson” after the Godhra train attack in 2002 killed 59 Hindus.
In his affidavit to the Supreme Court, Bhatt said that Modi reportedly told senior officials that emotions were running high among Hindus following the burning of the Sabarmati Express sleeper coach at Godhra.
BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said the police official had conveyed his position to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case.
“We have faith in the Supreme Court. We will wait for final word from the Supreme Court,” she said.
