The recall affects about 214,000 vehicles of the 2007 and 2008 RAV4 models and 94,000 vehicles of the 2008 Toyota Highlander and Highlander HV SUVs, Xinhua reported citing Detnews.

The problems stem from the specific models’ two sensors in the airbag system.

If both the sensors fail “nearly simultaneously”, it may lead to an inadvertent deployment of the airbag, according to the company.

Vehicles equipped with this system have only been sold in the North American market.

The Japanese automaker received reports of minor injuries caused by the airbag fault, prompting the company to conduct a voluntary recall.

Toyota will send notification letters to owners of the involved vehicles by May, and dealers will replace the sensor system with a new one for free when parts become available.
