New Delhi : The Congress Monday wondered why Karnataka ombudsman Santosh Hegde did not use his powers to force an early resignation of outgoing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa after indicting him in a report on illegal mining.
Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said the party was only seeking a clarification.
“The law relating to Lokayukta (in Karnataka) has provisions that if the ombudsman finds a person guilty and makes a declaration, then he (named person) has no right to stay in the post. Was this declaration done in the case of (Yeddyurappa) whom he found allegedly corrupt,” Tewari asked.
He said the state Lokayukta also has powers to take action, without seeking any sanction, against a public servant found corrupt.
Yeddyurappa resigned Sunday following his indictment in the Lokayukta report on illegal mining. The BJP legislators are set to elect a new head of the legislature party in the state to replace Yeddyurappa.
