“We will attack legislators from Garo Hills and bomb the offices of Congress party and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Garo Hills if the government does not withdraw the CoBRA (Combat Battalion for Resolute Action) commandos,” GNLA Spokesman Nikjang Marak said.

The GNLA had carried out unsuccessful grenade attack in West Garo Hills district after its threat to bomb commercial areas across Meghalaya if the government did not withdraw central forces from Garo Hills.

The Congress is leading a four-party Meghalaya United Alliance government, while the NCP with 13 legislators from Garo Hills region sits in the opposition.

Incidentally, both Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and Leader of Oppsoition Conrad K. Sangma represent assembly constituencies from Garo Hills region.

“Our forces are on alert and we are prepared to meet eventuality,” a police official told IANS.

GNLA’s threat came after two units of Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) commandos and five companies of Border Security Force (BSF) troopers were deployed in the Garo Hills region.

The GNLA, one of the five Garo rebel groups, is fighting for a sovereign ‘Garoland’.
