Thailand gets its first woman premier

By IANS,

Bangkok : The Thai parliament Friday chose Yingluck Shinawatra as the country’s first female prime minister.

Yingluck, 44, won 296 of the parliament’s 500 seats, RIA Novosti reported.

She is the sister of former Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra, who was deposed in a military coup in 2006.

Thaksin Shinawatra lives in exile in Dubai due to a conviction for abuse of power. The Pheu Thai party is expected to announce an amnesty, although Yingluck has said this will not be a priority.
