No decision on repeal of armed forces act

New Delhi : The government has taken no decision on the recommendation to repeal the Armed Forces Special Power Act that gives sweeping powers to the military in the northeast.

“No final decision has been taken on these recommendations,” Minister of State for Home M. Ramachandran said in the Lok Sabha.

He said a committee under the chairmanship of Justice Jeevan Reddy set up by the government had recommended the repeal of the act and amending the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The minister said the Armed Forces Special Power Act covers the whole of Assam and Nagaland, almost the whole of Manipur, and parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Tripura.
