Congress discusses strategy to prevent stalling of parliament

By IANS,

New Delhi : With a combative opposition disrupting parliament over alleged irregularities in the Commonwealth Games preparations and a host of other issues, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday held a strategy meeting with his senior party colleagues to find a way to ensure the smooth functioning of the monsoon session of parliament.

The meeting of the Congress core group, which was held in the absence of party chief Sonia Gandhi who is recuperating from a surgery in the US, was attended by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Defence Minister A.K. Antony and Political Secretary to the Congress president Ahmed Patel.

The meeting voiced concern over repeated disruptions of parliament by an aggressive opposition which is trying to pin down the government over various issues, including the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on alleged irregularities in the conduct of the Commonwealth Games.

The opposition has contended that the CAG report blamed the Prime Minister’s Office and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for the alleged irregularities in the 2010 Games.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and his deputy Rajiv Shukla were also present at the meeting.

The meeting also discussed the legislative agenda and explored ways to ensure the passage of at least some of around 30 bills which are said to be pending even if the opposition failed to cooperate fully.
