Attari (Punjab) : To mark India’s Independence Day, troopers of the Border Security Force (BSF) offered sweets to their counterparts from the Pakistan Rangers at the Attari-Wagah joint land checkpost between the two countries born after the partition of the subcontinent 64 years ago.
Senior officers from both sides were present at the brief ceremony as greetings and sweets were exchanged at the checkpost, 30 km from Amritsar in the Indian Punjab.
On Sunday, Pakistan Rangers troopers had offered sweets to their Indian counterparts to celebrate 65 years of the creation of Pakistan (Aug 14).
Peaceniks from the Hind-Pak Dosti Manch (India-Pakistan friendship forum) held a candlelight vigil at midnight (intervening night of Aug 14 and 15) on the Attari side of the border gates.
Journalist and activist Kuldip Nayar, Mahatma Gandhi’s granddaughter Tara Gandhi and other activists gathered at Attari. Their comrades from the Pakistani gathered at the Wagah side of the border.
Activists of the forum earlier Sunday went to the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, the venue where hundreds of unarmed Indian protestors were shot and killed by British troops April 13, 1919, and paid obeisance.
