Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday announced a compensation of Rs.2 lakh to the families of each of those who have died in the flood caused by torrential rain in the state.
“In the last seven days, 27 people have died because of the floods and of snake bite. The families of those who died will be given Rs.2 lakh each as financial support,” said Banerjee.
She also announced sum of Rs.10,000 for those whose houses were completely destroyed and Rs.2,000 for partially damaged houses.
Banerjee said the government would endeavour to include more farmers under the Kisan card initiative.
“The flood has been a major disaster for the farmers. The crops have all been ruined. If the farmers have the Kisan card all their losses can be compensated. The government would endeavour to bring as many farmers under the initiative as possible.”
About 1.9 million people across 14 districts have been affected in the deluge triggered by heavy torrential rains.
Altogether 135,000 houses spread over 195 blocks and 57 municipalities have been fully or partly damaged.
Udaynarayanpur and Amta in Howrah district and Khanakul in Hooghly district are the worst affected blocks.
