Chennai : The indefinite strike called by truckers seeking a cut in toll charges continued for the second day Saturday but did not impact much the movement of essential goods, state transport department officials here said.
“Trucks that carried public distribution shop items, milk and fuel plied more or less as normal. Movement of trucks carrying vegetables was also not affected much,” an official told IANS.
Movement of other commercial goods was, however, affected due to the strike, he said.
The All India Motor Transport Congress called a strike in the southern zone comprising Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Puducherry demanding reduction in toll charges.
“On a normal day, around 75,700 trucks used to carry non-essential items. This number came down to around 33,700 trucks Saturday,” he said.
Tamil Nadu Police said around 131,500 trucks kept off Tamil Nadu roads on the second day of the agitation.
According to some truckers, the strike has affected movement of goods in the western belt of Tamil Nadu.
