Lucknow : At least five people, including a policeman, were injured in a communal clash over a land dispute in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, police said Thursday.
Hindus and Muslims in Wazirganj area clashed late Wednesday over a land dispute. Heated arguments snowballed and two groups resorted to stone pelting and firing.
“A large number of people from both sides started vandalising shops and attacked the police teams trying to defuse the matter,” Deputy Superintendent of Police S.K. Singh told reporters in Bahraich, some 140 km from here.
Police had to use batons to control the situation.
The condition of one of the injured is stated to be serious.
“With the assistance of the force of as many as four police stations, we were able to bring the situation under control,” he added.
Security in Wazirganj and adjoining areas has been strengthened.
