Chandigarh : The Election Commission (EC) has directed the Punjab government to keep a close watch on two of its senior officers following complaints that they were likely to misuse their position to contest state assembly polls scheduled early next year, an official said Thursday.
“The chief secretary has been requested to keep a watch on the activities of the Principal Secretary to Chief Minister D.S. Guru, against whom a complaint had been received from various political parties. Similarly, DGP (Director General of Police) P.S. Gill’s activities in Moga are to be reported upon by the home secretary,” a spokesman of the chief electoral office said here.
Political parties, including the main opposition Congress, told Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi earlier this month that these two officers were exploring electoral prospects and misusing their positions to achieve these ends.
Guru and Gill are holding two of the most important and sensitive offices in the state government.
