Alongside Bhowanipore, by-poll will also be held for the Basirhat Uttar constituency in North 24 Parganas, the Election Commission (EC) announced here Thursday.

Banerjee, a Lok Sabha member, did not contest the April-May assembly polls.

State PWD Minister and Trinamool Congress state chief Subrata Bakshi, who won from Bhowanipore in the polls, quit the seat to make way for Banerjee who would be in the fray for the assembly for the first time. Bhowanipore is part of Banerjee’s Kolkata South Lok Sabha seat.

Basirhat (Uttar) fell vacant after Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) lawmaker Mostafa Bin Quasem allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the balcony of his room in the MLAs’ Hostel.

However, Quasem’s son Masum Bin Quasem suspected foul play in the death, after which the chief minister ordered a judicial inquiry.

The counting for both constituencies will take place Sep 28, the EC said in a statement here.

Notification will be issued Aug 29 with the last date of filing of nominations being Sep 5.

The scrutiny will be held Sep 6.

The commission will use Electronic Voting Machines in all the polling stations.
