200 Anna supporters detained outside Rahul Gandhi’s house

New Delhi : Around 200 supporters of social activist Anna Hazare, who gathered outside Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s residence here demanding a strong anti-graft bill, were detained Friday, police said.

“We detained around 200 protesters around 6 p.m. and took them to a nearby police station. We will release them when the situation gets under control,” said a police officer.

Earlier, Hazare’s supporters marched to the 12, Tughlak Lane residence of Gandhi and shouted slogans in support of the 74-year-old leader whose fast continued for the 11th day Friday.

“Annaji has appealed to people to hold peaceful protests outside Rahul Gandhi’s residence for passing the Jan Lokpal bill soon,” said a member of Team Anna who courted arrest.

The Jan Lokpal bill demands inclusion of the prime minister, the higher judiciary and the conduct of MPs in parliament under the purview of the Lokpal (ombudsman).

“We have put barricades near his (Rahul Gandhi’s) house,” said a police officer.
