Singhvi declines comment on Tewari’s withdrawal

By IANS,

New Delhi : Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who heads the parliamentary standing committee scrutinising the Lokpal bill, Wednesday declined to comment on his party colleague Manish Tewari’s decision to recuse himself from the panel,

Talking to reporters, Singhvi, who is also a Congress spokesman, said that the standing committees were reconstituted after almost a year and their composition was the prerogative of parliament’s presiding officers.

“As members or as chairman, we have no role in it (composition). It is largely done by political parties and ultimately by presiding officers. I have absolutely nothing to say,” he said.

Singhvi heads the standing committee on personnel, public grievances, law and justice which is looking into Lokpal bill. The committee was constituted Aug 31 last year.

Singhvi said he was not aware of Tewari’s move.

Tewari Wednesday announced he was recusing himself from the committee.

He had accused social activist Anna Hazare of being involved in corruption “from head to toe”, but later expressed regret over his remarks.
