Congress wants minister sacked over botched eye camp

By IANS,

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh Congress Wednesday sought the suspension of Health Minister Amar Agrawal holding him responsible for a botched eye operation camp at a government health facility last month that blinded 45 poor people.

“It was a tragic incident, dozens of people were blinded at the government health camp and surprisingly state’s health minister was unfazed by the incident,” said Congress general secretary B.K. Hariprasad at a district-level party workers convention at Balod in Durg district.

The Congress convention was held at Balod where as many as 45 poverty-hit elderly people lost eye sight after government brought over 300 people from their villages to a health camp and operated them for cataract in late October.

People in Balod, angry over the botched eye operation, and family members of several victims stormed into a Congress convention Wednesday to seek justice.

Hariprasad added that Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh must suspend the health minister from his cabinet.

The demand for suspension of Agrawal from Bharatiya Janata Party government was backed by several party leaders.
