Gilani received Clinton’s phone call Saturday evening. The secretary of state conveyed her personal condolences on the death of Pakistani soldiers.

A NATO attack Nov 26 on two Pakistan Army border check-posts left 24 soldiers dead, sparking outrage in the country.

Clinton said the attack was not intentional and that “we must wait for the outcome of the investigation”, reported Associated Press of Pakistan.

The US has the highest regard for Pakistan’s sovereignty, she said, adding that this incident should not be allowed to jeopardise the bilateral relationship as Pakistan and US have common interests.

She also spoke on Pakistan’s refusal to participate in the Bonn conference on Afghanistan. Pakistan decided to boycott the Dec 5 conference that would discuss the security situation and the future of Afghanistan.

Gilani said he had referred the matter of Pakistan’s participation at Bonn to the parliament’s National Security Committee and the committee supported the decision of the cabinet not to participate in the conference.

He reiterated that Pakistan had played a positive role for peace and stability in the region and had rendered many sacrifices in fighting terrorism.
