Chronology of previous fire disasters in the last 15 years:
Nov 20, 2011: At least 15 people were killed and over 34 injured in a fire at a congregation of eunuchs at a community park in east Delhi.
March 23, 2010: A major fire in the landmark British-era Stephen Court in the heart of Kolkata’s bustling Park Street claimed 43 lives. Several people trapped in the building jumped to their deaths as ill-equipped rescuers and firemen failed to reach or rescue them.
April 10, 2006: At least 50 people were charred to death and scores injured in a fire at a consumer electronic goods fair at Victoria Park in Meerut.
July 16, 2004: At least 94 children were charred to death and 18 sustained severe burn injuries in a fire accident in a school in Kumbakonam of Tamil Nadu. The fire apparently started from the kitchen and spread to a row of thatched roof classrooms.
Jan 23, 2004: At least 49 people were killed and about 50 injured in a fire during a wedding at a marriage hall at Srirangam in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchi district. Among the dead were the bridegroom, 20 women and four children.
Aug 6, 2001: At least 25 mentally ill people, including 11 women, were killed and five suffered burns in a fire that swept across a home for mentally ill in Erwadi in Tamil Nadu.
June 13, 1997: At least 59 people were killed and over 100 injured in the subsequent stampede after a fire broke out in Delhi’s Uphaar cinema during the screening of Hindi film “Border”.
