“Our next summit is already scheduled for Jan 30, 2012, and it will be focused on jobs,” Van Rompuy said in a video message.

Employment is “a big challenge in the context where zero growth expected in most of our economies, and in some of them, there will be even an recession”, he added.

While calling for strong action on employment, Van Rompuy also said that “bringing financial stability to the eurozone remains absolutely the key for our future”, reported Xinhua.

“Almost all our member states are engaged in huge reform programmes aiming at more competitiveness for our companies and at much sounder public finances,” said Van Rompuy, adding that “there is a social way out of the crisis”.

He said battling the debt crisis is “a joint effort” and warned that “the path is long, longer than we expected”.

“But let there be no doubt — there is a fundamental political will to move forward as a union respecting fully each other’s situation,” Van Rompuy said in the two-minute video.
